Seals at Roughnecks: Game Preview

Coming off a statement win over the Vancouver Warriors, the San Diego Seals will hit the road to face the Calgary Roughnecks at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night at 6:30 PM PT. San Diego’s 10-goal run sparked a third-quarter comeback to clinch the season series over the Warriors.

“Our offense did a great job moving the ball,” said assistant captain Cam Holding. “We out loose-balled them all over the floor. We were creating repossessions which led to more balls in the back of their net. Defensively, our communication was clear and concise leading to quicker decisions and limited chances for the opponent. We fatigued their defense and put ourselves in the driver’s seat.”

Saturday’s game featured a milestone for captain Brodie Merrill, who scooped up his 2,518th loose ball to become the NLL’s all-time leader.

“Brodie had an incredible accomplishment on Saturday,” continued Holding. “He is a true leader on and off the floor. Throughout the game, he showed leadership and composure despite our early struggles. He kept us focused and motivated to come out stronger in the second half. I’m very happy for Brodie, and I’m glad I was able to be a part of that moment with him.”

This will be San Diego’s first and only visit to the ‘Dome in the 2020 regular season. All-time, the Seals and Roughnecks are knotted at 2-2, with Calgary earning the win in the last meeting. In a tight West Division, Saturday’s matchup could springboard San Diego’s playoff hopes.

“We have to prepare during the week to allow us to be focused during the game,” continued Holding. “We need to communicate all over the floor to limit the poor decision making, outwork them in every aspect of the game and limit their transition game. [Roughnecks goalie] Del Bianco does a good job at getting the ball up the floor to allow their big offensive players opportunities in transition. If we can do that, we’ll put ourselves in a good place this weekend.”

Following early season struggles, San Diego hopes last week’s win will spark a second-half surge. The Seals will play four of their eight remaining games against divisional opponents.

“I think our team has been really great at certain points throughout the season,” finished Holding. “We need to bring it all together, make good decisions and be consistent for a full 60-minute effort on Saturday night in Calgary. We’re ready for a tough West Division battle.”

Fans will be able to watch Saturday’s game on B/R Live. B/R Live – Turner’s live sports streaming service – will stream all San Diego Seals games throughout the 2019-20 season.
