The resurgent San Diego Seals, 7-6 and winners of four of their last five, are about to hit a pivotal stretch of their schedule as their next four games are all on the road, starting with a contest in Calgary this Saturday night (March 22) against the Roughnecks. Faceoff is 6 p.m. PT.
Saturday night’s game will be broadcast in San Diego on Fox 5 San Diego and streamed to a global audience on ESPN+.
The Seals are clicking on all cylinders as they embark on the road swing. This past Sunday they scored a franchise-record 20 goals in a 20-11 win over Las Vegas with forwards Rob Hellyer and Wes Berg each recording “Sock Tricks” with six goals apiece. It marked the first time since 2009 that a pair of teammates each scored six in an NLL game. For Hellyer, his sixth goal was the 300th of his career and was one shy of his career high while Berg’s six tied his single-game career best.
During this most recent five-game stretch in which the Seals are 4-1, they’re averaging a healthy 14.0 goals per game. In the five games prior in which they went just 1-4, the team averaged just 8.2 goals in those five contests.
Saturday’s game has playoff implications for both teams. The Seals currently sit in sixth place in the NLL where the top eight teams make the playoffs. Calgary, 7-7, currently sits in the eighth spot. And while the Seals have won four of their last five, Calgary has dropped three of their last four, including a 11-6 home loss to Buffalo this past Saturday night. The Roughnecks beat the Bandits however, 17-11, the week prior in Buffalo.
Expect more fireworks this weekend as the game features four of the League’s top 16 goal scorers and the two who will don Roughnecks jerseys are both former Seals. On the San Diego side, Berg ranks fourth in the League with 35 and Hellyer’s tied for 16th with 27, while on the opposite side, Curtis Dickson leads the NLL with 39 goals this season while Dane Dobbie checks in behind Berg in fifth with 33. The game will also feature two of the NLL’s top transition men. The Seals’ Zach Currier is second in the League this season with 136 loose balls secured while Calgary’s Justin Inacio is fourth with 133.
Seals-Roughnecks Head-to-Head: All-time, the Seals and Roughnecks have met 12 times in the regular season and once in the playoffs. The Seals lead the all-time regular-season series 9-3 and they are 5-2 in games played in Calgary. The Roughnecks won the lone postseason meeting.
