This week (Nov. 2-10) marks National Celebrate Lacrosse Week across the U.S. and locally, the San Diego Seals celebrated the sport this morning with a lacrosse clinic at Roosevelt Middle School in San Diego.
Students like eighth grader Garrett Gardner were excited to have the Seals come out to their school, located adjacent to San Diego’s Balboa Park and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.
“It was really fun experiencing and playing lacrosse since we don’t play it that much,” explained Gardner. “I’ve never played it before so it was really cool to shoot, pass and see how it works. I was also excited to meet the players and learn a new sport. It was a cool experience.”
Seals players Jake Govett, Chris Origlieri and Zack Deaken were all on-hand to help lead the clinic that featured more than 100 of Roosevelt’s students.
“It’s super cool,” said Govett. “This is what we do it for, introducing the game to new kids and new students and growing the game in any way that we can. There’s a big opportunity to do that in San Diego. It’s a big lacrosse community and it can always get bigger. We love to help out.”
National Celebrate Lacrosse Week is an initiative that was created by USA Lacrosse to celebrate the sport of lacrosse and to bring the lacrosse community together to help showcase the game. A major component of the initiative is to make the sport of lacrosse more welcoming, diverse and inclusive.
Roosevelt Middle School was a perfect fit as it’s an International Baccalaureate school
Roosevelt physical education teacher Kelsey Courneya was thrilled that their school was selected for an on-campus clinic during National Celebrate Lacrosse Week.
“This is incredible,” beamed Courneya. “I don’t think many of these kids have had exposure to the game, so this is awesome and they’re excited. They want to have (lacrosse) in P.E., and they all want to know ‘when do we get to play?’
